Getting around in Malaysia without a Car

One thing I had to figure out quickly after moving to Cyberjaya was transport. Since we didn’t want to buy a car immediately, I tried different options over the past few months - Grab, SOCAR, and short-term rentals. Sharing what worked for me and what didn’t.

Grab - Convenient but Gets Expensive

Initially, I relied mostly on Grab.

It’s very easy and reliable. Cars are available quickly and drivers are generally good.

I used Grab for:

  • dropping my kid to school

  • picking him back

  • grocery runs

  • daily errands

  • general city travel

For occasional use, it’s great.

But when you start using it daily, the cost adds up fast. Monthly spending can become quite high, especially for family usage and repeated short trips.

SOCAR - Very Flexible Option

In between, I started using SOCAR for hourly rentals.

This turned out to be a very good middle option.

What I use SOCAR for:

  • short errands

  • quick meetings

  • half-day usage

  • flexible travel when needed

Why I like it:

  • pay only for the hours used

  • no long-term commitment

  • easy app-based booking

  • general good availability in Cyberjaya / KL areas

For flexible usage without owning a car, this works really well.

Daily Rentals - Best for Weekend Trips

For longer usage (especially weekend travel), I prefer daily/weekly basis car rentals.

Good for:

  • weekend getaways

  • long drives

  • full-day usage

  • family trips

Usually more cost-effective than using Grab for multiple long trips.
